Arthrotec Used For
Arthrotec is indicated for treatment of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It is especially prescribed for those patients who are at a high risk of developing NSAID-induced gastric and duodenal ulcers and related complications.
Directions for Arthrotec
The recommended dosage for osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis is Arthrotec 50 mg three times a day. For patients who experience intolerance, Arthrotec can be administered in 50 mg or 75 mg twice a day, though lower dosages are less effective in preventing ulcers.
How Arthrotec works
Misoprostol, one of the active ingredients of Arthrotec possess abortifacient properties and so this medication should not be administered to pregnant women. Misoprostol may cause miscarriage if given to pregnant women at any time during pregnancy. Miscarriages caused by misoprostol may be incomplete, which could lead to dangerous bleeding, hospitalization, surgery, infertility, or maternal or fetal death. Patients with considerable dehydration should first be rehydrated and then started on Arthrotec therapy. Caution is also recommended in patients with preexisting kidney disease. Patients who have been on extended corticosteroid therapy should have their therapy tapered slowly if a decision is made to discontinue corticosteroids and start on Arthrotec.
Side effects of Arthrotec
Like all other medications, Arthrotec also has its side effects which include abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, flatulence, postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, fatigue, fever, infection, malaise, sepsis, arrythmia, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, hypertension, hypotension, myocardial infarction, palpitations, premature ventricular contractions, tachycardia, appetite changes, constipation, esophageal ulceration, anemia and vomiting. In rare cases, Arthrotec might also cause unexplained and fatal complications in patients. It is advisable to contact a doctor immediately if any of the above listed side effects get aggravated or persist over an extended period.
