ATROVENT INHALER - Ipratropium Bromide
Atrovent Used For
Atrovent (Ipratropium Bromide) Inhalation Aerosol is prescribed as a bronchodilator for maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic bronchodilator.
Directions for Atrovent
The recommended starting dose of Atrovent Inhaler or nasal spray is two inhalations (36 mcg) four times a day. Additional inhalations may be taken as required but total number of inhalations in any 24 hour period should not exceed 12. If the inhaler has not be used for more than 24 hours, it is recommended to "test-spray" it three times before using it for first time.
How Atrovent works
Patients should avoid getting Atrovent into their eyes since this might result in precipitation or worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma, mydriasis, eye pain or discomfort, temporary blurring of vision, visual halos or colored images in association with red eyes from conjunctival and corneal congestion. Should the medication get into the eyes by mistake, wash with plenty of water and consult a physician immediately. Dose and frequency of usage of Atrovent should not be changed without medical consultation. Indiscriminate use of the medication might lead the effects of the medicine to diminish.
Side effects of Atrovent
Like all other medications, Atrovent also has its side effects which include difficulty in breathing, increased cough, purulent sputum, wheezing, body aches or pain, chills, cough, cough producing mucus, dryness of mouth, ear congestion, fever, loss of voice, nasal congestion, runny nose, shortness of breath, sneezing, sore throat, unpleasant taste and unusual tiredness or weakness. Some patients may also experience constipation or lower abdominal pain or bloating, increased wheezing, tightness in chest, or difficulty in breathing, severe eye pain, skin rash or hives, swelling of face and lips or eyelids. It is advisable to consult a doctor immediately if any of the above listed side effects get aggravated or persist over an extended period.
