CEFZIL - Cefprozil

Cefzil Used For

Cefzil - Cefprozil is a cephalosporin antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. It is prescribed for the treatment of various types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, and skin infections.

Directions for Cefzil medication

For bacterial infections, the recommended dose for adults and teenagers is 250 or 500 milligrams (mg) every 12 to 24 hours for 10 days. Children between 2 to 12 years of age can be administered 7.5 to 20 mg per kilogram (kg) (3.4 to 9.09 mg per pound) of body weight every 12 to 24 hours for 10 days. The recommended dose for infants and children 6 months to 12 years of age is 7.5 to 15 mg per kg (3.4 to 6.81 mg per pound) of body weight every 12 hours for 10 days. For infants below 6 months of age, dose and administration of Cefzil should be determined by the doctor.

How Cefzil antibiotic works

Cefzil should not be taken by patients who have a history of an allergic reaction to another cephalosporin or a penicillin. Patients with kidney disease, or a gastrointestinal (digestive) disease such as colitis should get proper medical advice before starting on this medication. Cefzil oral suspension contains 28 mg of phenylalanine per teaspoon (5 mL) of suspension for both the 125 mg/5 mL and 250 mg/5 mL dosage strengths. Individuals with phenylketonuria may require monitoring of intake of phenylalanine.

Side effects of Cefzil antibiotic

The most severe side effects of Cefzil that require immediate medical attention include rashes, redness, or itching; severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; mucous or blood in the stool; or unusual bleeding or bruising. Other lesser side effects like mild nausea or diarrhea, or yeast infection of the mouth or vagina are more likely to occur during treatment with Cefzil.

Other Cefzil medication Information

Tablets maybe split and taken at half the dose. The tablets should be stored at room temperature away from moisture and heat while the suspension should be stored in the refrigerator. Any unused medication older than 14 days should be discarded. There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activities during treatment with Cefzil unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
