Desyrel Trazodone medication is an antidepressant that works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. Desyrel is prescribed for relief from symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; sleeping too much; insomnia; and thoughts of death or suicide.
Directions for Desyrel medication
Dosage of Desyrel varies from patient to patient and is to be determined by the doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Desyrel should only be taken with a meal or a light snack. Food increases the amount of medicine that is absorbed by the body and may also help to decrease dizziness. It is necessary to take the medication regularly to get maximum benefit.
How Desyrel Trazodone medication works
Desyrel may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so patients on this medication should use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Dizziness may also occur when rising from a sitting or lying position so it is advisable to rise slowly to prevent dizziness and a possible fall. Alcohol may combine with Desyrel to increase drowsiness and dizziness and should be avoided. This medication should not be taken while recovering from a heart attack. Patients with heart diseases, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats or angina need special monitoring if started on a treatment of Desyrel.
Side effects of Desyrel Trazodone
Patients on Desyrel need to be monitored for worsening symptoms of depression and/or suicidal thoughts at the start of therapy or when doses are changed. This concern about increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors is greater for patients 18 years or younger and may extend beyond start of therapy or dose changes. Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical help if you experience a prolonged (4 hours or longer), painful, or inappropriate erection. This could lead to a serious condition requiring surgery. In addition to the above, Desyrel could cause any or all of the following reactions: an irregular heartbeat or chest pains; dizziness or drowsiness; headache; insomnia or vivid dreams; dry mouth, upset stomach, nausea, or vomiting; diarrhea or constipation; tremors (shaking); or blurred vision. It may also lead to severe anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, severe restlessness, and mania (mental and/ or physical hyperactivity). These symptoms may be associated with the development of worsening symptoms of depression and/ or suicidal thoughts or actions.
