Diflucan Fluconazole is an antifungal medication prescribed for the treatment of yeast infections of the mouth, throat, and esophagus; vaginal yeast infections; fungal urinary tract infections; pneumonia caused by yeast; and fungal infections throughout the whole body and in the blood. It is also used to prevent fungal infections from occurring in people with suppressed immune systems such as cancer chemotherapy patients, organ transplant patients, and AIDS patients.

Directions for Diflucan

Recommended dose of Diflucan for treatment of vaginal yeast infections, for adults is a single dose of 150 milligrams (mg). Depending on other problems being treated, adults and teenagers can be administered from 200 to 400 mg on the first day, then 100 to 400 mg once a day for weeks or months. Children 6 months of age and older can be started on a dose of 6 to 12 mg per kilogram (mg/kg) (2.7 to 5.4 mg per pound) of body weight on the first day, then titrated to 3 to 12 mg/kg (1.35 to 5.4 mg per pound) of body weight once a day for weeks or months, depending on the medical problem being treated. For infants and children up to 6 months of age, the dose must be determined by the consulting doctor.

How Diflucan Fluconazole works

Other alcohol-containing preparations (for example, elixirs, cough syrups, tonics) may also cause similar problems.

Diflucan may cause liver damage resulting in pale stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, or dark urine; or a rash, which may require immediate medical attention.
