DIOVAN HCT - Valsartan - Hydrochlorthiazide

Diovan HCT Used For

Diovan HCTZ (Valsartan & Hydrochlorothiazide) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and for decreasing edema (swelling) by increasing the amount of water and salt excreted in the urine. Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide may also be used for purposes other than those listed above as per doctor's advice.

Directions for Diovan Valsartan HCT medication

The recommended starting dose of Diovan HCTZ is 80/12.5 mg or 160/25 mg once daily for patients who are not volume depleted. Patients requiring greater reductions may be started at the higher dose. The drug is effective over a dose range of 80/12.5 mg to 320/25 mg, administered in once-a-day regimen.

How Diovan HCT works

Pregnant or potentially pregnant women should not take Diovan HCTZ, especially during the second and third trimester of pregnancy since its active ingredient valsartan can cause severe injury and even death to the developing fetus. The drug may also cause dizziness or drowsiness and it is advisable to first understand reaction to the drug before attempting to drive, operate machinery or perform other hazardous tasks while on this medication. Also use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position. Alcohol should be avoided while on Diovan HCTZ since the combination might cause blood pressure to plummet and lead to extreme dizziness and even loss of consciousness.

Side effects of Diovan HCT

Like all other medicines, Diovan HCTZ has its own side effects which include allergic reactions like difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives, little or no urine, unusual fatigue, abnormal bleeding or bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fainting, diarrhea or upset stomach, muscle pain or cramps, dizziness, insomnia, congestion or cough, tingling or numbness in the arms, legs, hands, or feet, excessive urination, muscle weakness or cramps, increased hunger or thirst, nausea or decreased appetite, or increased skin sensitivity to sunlight. It is advisable to seek medical advice if any side effects become aggravated or persist over an extended period.

Diovan HCT should be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is detected. The tablet may be split and taken at half the dose but only after medical advice.
