Effexor XR Used For
Effexor XR (venlafaxine hydrochloride) extended-release capsules are prescribed for treatment of major depressive disorder, specifically Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) & Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia.
Directions for Effexor XR
The recommended starting dose for Effexor is 75 mg/day, administered in two or three divided doses, taken with food. Following evaluation of tolerance and effect on symptoms, the dose may be increased to 150 mg/day and then to 225 mg/day. Increments in dosage should be restricted only to 75 mg/day and should be made at intervals of at least 4 days each. Effexor XR should be administered in a single dose with food either in the morning or in the evening at approximately the same time each day.
How Effexor XR works
Patients on Effexor XR as well as their family should stay constantly alert for the appearance of anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia, hypomania, mania, worsening of depression and suicidal feelings, especially during the start of treatment. It is necessary to report such symptoms to the doctor immediately, particularly so if they are severe or abrupt. Rashes, hives or other allergic indications should also be promptly reported. Effexor XR is not advisable for pregnant women late in the third trimester since it can lead to complications which might require prolonged hospitalization respiratory support, and tube feeding.
Side effects of Effexor XR
As with all other medicine, Effexor XR too has its side effects which include asthenia, gastrointestinal complaints (anorexia, dry mouth, nausea), CNS complaints (anxiety, insomnia, decreased libido, nervousness, somnolence, dizziness), abnormalities of sexual function (abnormal ejaculation, orgasmic dysfunction, impotence), yawning, sweating, abnormal vision, chest pain substernal, chills, fever, neck rigidity & pain, face edema, intentional injury, malaise, moniliasis, pelvic pain, photosensitivity, suicidal feelings, withdrawal syndrome, and in rare cases - appendicitis, bacteremia, carcinoma, cellulitis. It is advisable to constantly monitor the patient for any aggravated side effects and get medical attention as soon as possible.
Other Effexor XR Information
Each Effexor XR capsule should be swallowed whole with fluid and should not be divided, crushed, chewed, or placed in water. If patient has trouble with swallowing, the medication may be administered by carefully opening the capsule and sprinkling the contents on a spoonful of applesauce. The mixture of drug and applesauce should be swallowed immediately without chewing, followed by a glass of plain water to ensure complete swallowing of the pellets.
