Exelon Used For
Exelon Rivastigmine Tartrate is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
Directions for Exelon
The recommended dosage of Exelon is 6-12 mg/day, given as twice a day dosing (daily doses of 3 to 6 mg BID). The recommended starting dose of Exelon is 1.5 mg twice a day (BID) followed by an increase to 3 mg BID after at least two weeks of treatment and depending on the tolerance of the patient. It can subsequently be increased to 4.5 mg BID & 6 mg BID after a minimum of 2 week treatment at any particular strength. Exelon should be taken with meals in divided doses in the morning and evening.
How Exelon medication works
Exelon administration should be carefully monitored since it may cause nausea and vomiting along with anorexia and weight loss. Precautions also need to be taken regarding missed doses and it is advisable to consult a doctor before taking the next dose, if administration of the drug was missed for several days.
Side effects of Exelon
As with all other medicines, Exelon also causes certain side effects which include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, dizziness, increased sweating, accidental trauma, fatigue, malaise, influenza-like symptoms, reduction in weight, infection of the urinary tract as well as rhinitis. Side effects and symptoms of over dose of Exelon include seizures, fast weak pulse, greatly increased sweating, greatly increased watering of mouth, irregular breathing, increasing muscle weakness, large pupils, low blood pressure, nausea, slow heartbeat & severe vomiting. It is advisable to seek immediate medical attention should any side effect become aggravated or last for an extended period.

Exelon might lead to dizziness, clumsiness or make some patients unsteady and it is advisable that patients understand their reaction to the medicine before driving, using machines or doing any other work that could be dangerous if done in a non alert state.
