Flomax Used For
Flomax (Tamsulosin HCL) capsules are indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In simpler terms, it is the gradual enlargement of the prostate in men as they get older.
Directions for Flomax dosage
The recommended dosage of Flomax capsules for treatment of signs and symptoms of BPH is one capsule of 0.4 mg once daily. The dose should be administered at the same time of everyday, approximately one half hour after meal (either lunch or dinner). Dosage may be increased to 0.8 mg once daily for those patients who fail to respond to 0.4 mg. Therapy with Flomax should be restarted at 0.4 mg once daily if it is interrupted or discontinued for an elongated period.
How Flomax medication works
Several patients may simultaneously have BPH and prostate cancer and both diseases cause highly similar symptoms. It is advisable to evaluate the patients thoroughly to rule out prostate cancer before starting them on Flomax.
Side effects of Flomax drug
As with all other drugs, Flomax too has its side effects which may include severe dizziness, prolonged or painful erection (lasting 4 hours or more), fainting, mild drowsiness, weakness, double vision, abnormal ejaculation or changes in libido. Certain patients may also suffer an allergic reaction that may cause difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue or face and / or hives. It is advisable consult a doctor immediately if the drug causes prolonged erection or fainting.
Other Flomax medicine Information
Patients should be cautious about driving, operating machinery or performing hazardous tasks while on the drug since it might lead to dizziness and drowsiness. Flomax capsules should not be crushed, chewed or opened and should be swallowed whole with plenty of water. Patients should also be advised about the possibility of priapism due to Flomax and the need for immediate medical attention since it could lead to permanent erectile dysfunction (impotence).
