IMITREX - Sumatriptan Succinate
Imitrex Used For
Imitrex (Sumatriptan) tablets are prescribed for patients with migraine or cluster headache issues to relieve pain and related symptoms.
Directions for Imitrex dosage
The recommended dosage of Imitrex for acute treatment of migraine in adults is a single tablet either of 25, 50, or 100 mg as per doctor's advice and the patient's medical condition. If the patient feels minor relief or the migraine returns after some relief, a second dose may be administered after 2 hours of the first dose. Imitrex dosage should not exceed 200 mg in any twenty four hour period.
How Imitrex works
Imitrex should be administered with caution to patients with diseases that may alter the absorption, metabolism, or excretion of drugs, such as impaired hepatic or renal function. This medication should not be administered to patients with hemiplegic or basilar migraine. Imitrex should also not be given to patients with hypertension since it might lead to a high jump in blood pressure. A migraine attack or administration of Sumatriptan for relief from migraine might leave some people feeling drowsy or dizzy, so it is advisable not to drive or use machines or do any work that might be dangerous when done in a semi alert condition.
Side effects of Imitrex
Imitrex might lead some patients to experience pain or tightness in the chest or throat. Other side effects include shortness of breath, wheeziness, heart throbbing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, skin rash or lumps and rarely hives. Feelings of tingling, head, flushing (redness of face lasting a short time), heaviness or pressure were also experienced by certain patients after using Imitrex. It is advisable to consult a doctor if the side effects last for an extended period.
Other Imitrex Information
Imitrex can only provide relief from the pain of migraine but it can not prevent or reduce the number of attacks of the disease. Imitrex should only be administered to treat an actual migraine or cluster headache attack and should never be taken indiscriminately.
