LESCOL - Fluvastatin Sodium
Lescol Used For
Lescol is prescribed for patients with high blood cholesterol levels to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol and total cholesterol in your blood. Fluvastatin also reduces the amounts of triglycerides (another type of fat) and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in the blood. Through these reducing actions, Lescol helps reduce the risk of heart attacks, stroke and peripheral vascular disease by arresting hardening of arteries.
Directions for Lescol
The recommended dosage of Lescol for patients with high cholesterol levels for adults is 20 to 40 milligrams (mg) once a day in the evening. Dosage for children should be determined by the consulting doctor.
How Lescol drug works
Lescol should not be taken with alcohol since the combination can be damaging to the liver. It is advisable to talk to a doctor if you have kidney disease, drink alcoholic beverages, have a chronic muscular disease or have a blood disorder, before starting on fluvastatin. This medication is also not advisable for pregnant or lactating women since the active ingredients fluvastain passes into breast milk and may be harmful to a nursing infant.
Side effects of Lescol Fluvastatin
Like most other medications, Lescol too has side effects which include unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by a fever or flu like symptoms or yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unexplained fatigue, dark colored urine or pale colored stools. These may be early symptoms of muscle or liver problems. Some patients might also have an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives); decreased urine or rust-colored urine, blurred vision, gas, bloating, nausea, stomach upset, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhea, cough, headache or insomnia. It is advisable to have periodic consultation with your doctor while on Lescol and immediately report any aggravated or long lasting side effects.
