LEVAQUIN - Levofloxacin

Levaquin Tablets Used For

Levaquin (Levofloxacin) medication is a fluoroquinolone that is prescribed for the treatment of various types of bacterial infections.

Directions for Levaquin Tablets

The recommended dose of Levaquin for adults is 250 to 750 mg once a day for 3 to 28 days, depending on the medical problem for which they are being treated. The medicine is not recommended for treatment of children.

How Levaquin works

Levaquin is not suitable for use by children below 18 years of age as it may interfere with bone development. Each dose of the medication must be taken with a full glass of water and should be followed by several glasses of fluid through out the day to avoid formation of Levofloxacin crystals in urine. Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, the ulcer medicine sucralfate, or vitamin or mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc should not be taken at least 2 hours before or after a dose of Levaquin since this can greatly reduce the antibiotic effects of the medication. Levaquin may also increase skin sensitivity to sunlight and lead to a severe sunburn if patient under treatment is exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period. It is advisable to wear protective clothing and sunscreen if sun exposure is unavoidable. If exposure to sunlight leads to severe burning, redness, itching, rash, or swelling, immediate medical attention should be sought. Caution should be used while driving, operating machinery or performing other strenuous and hazardous activities since these may cause dizziness.

Side effects of Levaquin Tablets

As with all other medicines, Levaquin also has its side effects which may include any or all of the following: seizures, confusion, hallucinations, irregular heartbeats, chest pain, fainting, liver damage, yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue, muscle or joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, lightheadedness, drowsiness, insomnia, ringing in the ears, or increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. It is advisable to seek medical attention if any of the above side effects become aggravated or cause undue discomfort.

Other Levaquin Tablets Information
