Lopid Drug Used For
High levels of fat in the blood are responsible for an increased chance of heart disease, strokes, and other illnesses. Lopid (Gemfibrozil) is prescribed for the treatment and lowering of high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
Directions for Lopid medication
The dose of Lopid will be different for different patients and is to be determined by the doctor. The average recommended dose of Lopid for adults is 600 mg two times a day to be taken about 30 minutes before the morning and evening meals. If the dose prescribed by your doctor is different that this, follow your doctor's orders.
How Lopid medicine works
If your doctor recommends any special diet or exercise plan, if should be followed strictly since these are important factors when regulating cholesterol with this medication. Patients on Lopid should avoid driving, operating machinery, and performing other hazardous activities till such time as they are sure about how the medication affects them since Lopid may lead to drowsiness or dizziness, especially at the start of therapy.
Side effects of Lopid Gemfibrozil
As with all other medicines, Lopid may also have its side effects, which may or may not include any or all of the following: chest pain, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, clay-colored stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), rash or itching, sores in the mouth or on lips, swollen legs or feet, chills, fever, blood in the urine, muscle aches, pain, cramping, indigestion, headache, dizziness or drowsiness, or decreased sex drive. Medical attention should be sought if any of the above listed side effects get aggravated or cause undue discomfort.
Other Lopid Gemfibrozil Information
Each dose of Lopid must be taken with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Tablets may be split and taken at half the dose.
