Minocin Used For
Minocin (Minocycline) is an antibiotic prescribed for treatment of many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and others.
Directions for Minocin
Following are the recommended doses of Minocin: For bacterial or protozoal infections, adults and teenagers can be administered 200 milligrams (mg) at first, then 100 mg every 12 hours, or 100 to 200 mg at first, then 50 mg every 6 hours. For children older than 8 years of age, dose is based on their body weight and is usually 4 mg per kg or 1.8 mg per pound of body weight at first, then 2 mg per kg or 0.9 mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours. Tetracycline drugs are usually not prescribed in infants and children younger than 8 years as it may stain their teeth permanently.
How Minocin Antibiotic works
Patients taking Minocin should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light (e.g., tanning beds) since the medicine increases sensitivity of skin to sunlight and may lead to sunburn. When exposure to sun is unavoidable, use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing. Iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives should not be taken within 2 hours of taking this medication as these products may reduce the effectiveness of Minocin. This medication may also cause dizziness and so patients under treatment should avoid driving, operating machinery or performing other hazardous activities as these may be dangerous. Any unused and expired Minocin should be discarded since taking expired medication could severely damage the kidneys.
Side effects of Minocin Antibiotic
As with all other medications, Minocin also has its own side effects which may or may not include any or all of the following: severe headache, vision changes, confusion, liver damage, yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue, blood problems, fever, fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea, increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, dizziness, swollen tongue, or vaginal yeast infection. Seek immediate medical help if any of the above side effects become aggravated or cause undue discomfort.
