Nolvadex D Used For
Nolvadex D (Tamoxifen) is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of some types of breast cancer that require estrogen to grow.
Directions for Nolvadex D
The recommended dose of Nolvadex D for treatment of breast cancer in adult men and women is 20 to 40 milligrams (mg) daily. For reducing the risk of developing breast cancer women at high risk, Nolvadex D should be administered at 20 milligrams (mg) a day, for 5 years. For women with ductal carcinoma in situ, 20 mg of Nolvadex D can be administered for 5 years for reducing the risk of developing invasive breast cancer.
How Nolvadex D Tamoxifen works
Patients with a history of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg), pulmonary thrombosis (blood clot in the lung) or those who take the blood thinner Warfarin should inform their doctor about it before starting on Nolvadex D. This medication is known to be harmful to an unborn baby and should be avoided by pregnant women or those who plan to become pregnant during or within 2 months following treatment. It is advisable to use nonhormonal contraception (birth control) during and for 2 months following treatment with Nolvadex D. It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk and so it is advisable for lactating mothers to avoid taking it while they are breast-feeding a baby.
Nolvadex D side effects
As with all other medications, Nolvadex also has its own side effects which may or may not include any or all of the following: possible symptoms of a stroke such as unusual weakness, drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty walking or talking, possible symptoms of a blood clot in the lung such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood, possible symptoms of a blood clot in the brain or leg such as blurred vision, changes in vision, numbness, or pain or swelling in a leg, new breast lumps, bone pain, menstrual changes, abnormal vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, pelvic pain or pressure, pain or tenderness in the upper abdomen, yellowing of the skin or eyes, excessive nausea, vomiting, or thirst, dizziness, headache, mild nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, vaginal itching; hot flashes, changes in weight. It is advisable to seek immediate medical help if any of the above side effects become aggravated or cause undue discomfort. Treatment with Nolvadex D may also increase the risk of certain uterine cancers, stroke, and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), which can be fatal.
Other Nolvadex D Information
Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Tamoxifen can be taken with or without food. It is important to take Tamoxifen regularly to get the most benefit.
