Norvasc Used For
Norvasc is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, chronic stable angina & confirmed or suspected vasospastic angina. It acts directly on vascular smooth muscle to cause a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance and reduction in blood pressure.
Directions for Norvasc drug
The usual initial antihypertensive oral dose of Norvasc drug is 5 mg once daily with a maximum dose of 10 mg once daily. For elderly or fragile patients, Norvasc is recommended at 2.5 mg once daily. For children aged 6 to 17 years, the effective recommended dosage is 2.5 to 5 mg once daily. For chronic or vasospastic angina, 5 mg to 10 mg dosage of Norvasc is recommended, with the lower dose suggested in the elderly and in patients with hepatic insufficiency. Best effects are achieved at 10 mg for majority of patients.
How Norvasc medication works
Vasodilation effect is gradually induced by Norvasc medication and can rarely lead to acute hypotension, but it is advisable to use caution while administering Norvasc. This is particularly applicable for patients with severe aortic stenosis. This medicine may lead to tenderness, swelling or bleeding of the gums soon after start of treatment. This can be prevented through careful brushing and flossing of teeth and massaging of the gums.
Norvasc medicine’s side effects
The most common side effects are headache and edema. arrhythmia (including ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation), bradycardia, chest pain, hypotension, peripheral ischemia, syncope, tachycardia, postural dizziness, postural hypotension, vasculitis, hypoesthesia, neuropathy peripheral, paresthesia, tremor, vertigo, anorexia, constipation, dyspepsia, dysphagia, diarrhea, flatulence, pancreatitis, vomiting, gingival hyperplasia, dry mouth, sweating & increased hyperglycemia.

The tablet may be split and taken at half the dose listed above but only after medical advice. Other common brand names include Adalat, Calan, Cardizen, Dilacor & Procardia.
