PRINIVIL - Lisinopril

Prinivil Used For

Prinivil (Lisinopril) is in a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors that is prescribed for lowering blood pressure. It also helps treat congestive heart failure and improve the survival rate after a heart attack.

Directions for Prinivil Lisinopril

Following is the recommended dose of Prinivil for various conditions: For congestive heart failure, adults should be administered 5 to 20 mg once a day while for high blood pressure. Adults should be given 10 to 40 mg once a day. For immediate treatment following a heart attack, 5 mg of Prinivil can be given once a day at first and then gradually increased as per doctor's advice to 10 mg once a day. For administration to children for all of the above conditions, the use and dose must be determined by the doctor.

How Prinivil works

Prinivil should be avoided by pregnant women and those who plan on becoming pregnant soon. When taken during second and third trimesters of pregnancy, its active ingredient lisinopril can cause injury and even death of the developing fetus. Prevacid may also cause dangerous allergic reactions. It is advisable to inform your doctor if you have ever had allergic reactions involving swelling of lips, face, tongue, or throat or difficulty breathing before starting on this medication and seek emergency medical attention if any of these symptoms develop while under treatment with Prinivil. Patients on the medication should maintain proper fluid intake to prevent dehydration and related side effects since heavy sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or other causes of fluid loss may lead to very low blood pressure, dizziness, and fainting during therapy. If prescribed Prinivil, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, are on a salt-restricted diet or have high levels of potassium in your blood, are taking salt substitutes, potassium supplements, or potassium-sparing diuretics such as amiloride, triamterene, or spironolactone, or have diabetes. These conditions may warrant a change of medication or special monitoring and dose during treatment. Prinivil may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. Patients on the medication should avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. They should also be cautious while rising from a sitting or lying position as this may also lead to dizziness. Alcohol should be avoided as it may combine with Prinivil to cause extreme dizziness and drowsiness and cause blood pressure to plummet dangerously.

Prinivil Lisinopril side effects

As with all other medications, Prinivil also has its own side effects which may or may not include any or all of the following: difficulty breathing, little or no urine, irregular heartbeat or changes in heartbeat, chest pain, severe dizziness or fainting, signs of infection including sore throat or fever, mild dizziness or lightheadedness, headache, unusual fatigue or weakness, dry, tickling cough, muscle cramps, numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, arms, or legs, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes and/or impotence. It is advisable to seek immediate medical attention if any of the above symptoms become aggravated or cause undue discomfort.
