Sinemet CR Used For

Sinemet CR is indicated in the treatment of the symptoms of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (paralysis agitans), postencephalitic parkinsonism, and symptomatic parkinsonism which may follow injury to the nervous system by carbon monoxide intoxication and/or manganese intoxication.

Directions for Sinemet CR medication

Sinemet CR contains carbidopa and levodopa in a 1:4 ratio (either 50-200 tablet or 25-100 tablet). Careful titration is necessary for determination of daily dosage of Sinemet CR, with close monitoring for appearance or worsening of involuntary movements, dyskinesias or nausea. It is advisable to use a combination of Sinemet CR 50-200 & 25-100 to obtain the best dosage of the medication. The 25-100 tablets can be used as an alternative to the 50-200 half tablet.

How Sinemet CR works

It is necessary to conduct periodic evaluations of hepatic, hematopoietic, cardiovascular, and renal functions of patients during prolong therapy with Sinemet CR medication. Caution is recommended for patients with chronic wide-angle glaucoma to ensure that the intraocular pressure is well controlled and the patient is monitored carefully for changes in intraocular pressure during therapy.

Sinemet CR side effects

Like all other medications, Sinemet CR also has its side effects which include dyskinesia, nausea, hallucinations, confusion, dizziness, depression, urinary tract infection, headache, dream abnormalities, dystonia, vomiting, upper respiratory infection, dyspnea, back pain, dry mouth, anorexia, diarrhea, insomnia, orthostatic hypotension, shoulder & chest pain, muscle cramps, dyspepsia, constipation, taste alterations, dark saliva, alopecia, flushing, dark sweat, dark urine & malignant melanoma. It is advisable to consult a doctor immediately if any of the above listed side effects get aggravated or persist over an extended period.

Sinemet CR medication is a sustained-release formulation of carbidopa-levodopa and the ingredients are released over a 4 to 6 hour period. The medication must be taken at regular intervals as per the regimen advised by the doctor. No changes must be made in the prescribed dosage regimen or any additional antiparkinson medications including other carbidopa-levodopa preparations added without first consulting the physician. Sinemet CR may occasionally lead to dark colored (red, brown, or black) saliva, urine, or sweat. While these indications are clinically insignificant, they may discolor garments, discolored.
