Strattera Used For
Strattera (Atomoxetine) is prescribed for the treatment of attention deficit - hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Directions for Strattera medication
The recommended dosage of Strattera for treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD] in adults is 40 mg once a day, which can be increased or decreased or a change made in the number of times a day the medication is taken as per doctor's instructions. Children above 6 years of age can be started at 0.5 mg per kg of body weight once daily with increase/decrease and change in number of times medication should be taken daily as decided by the doctor. The dose of this medication of children less than 6 years of age must be determined by the doctor.
How Strattera medication works
Caution is advised for patients on Strattera while driving, operating machinery or performing hazardous activities as the medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Strattera should not be taken within 14 days of having taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor such as isocarboxazide, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine. Do not take this medication without first informing your doctor if you suffer from glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart disease, an irregular heart beat, cerebrovascular disease (history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) or "ministroke"), low blood pressure, liver problems, urinary retention or urinary hesitancy as these conditions might require special dosage or monitoring during treatment.
Strattera drug’s side effects
As with all other medications, Strattera also has its own side effects which may or may not include any or all of the following: irregular or fast heartbeats, chest pain, high blood pressure, blurred vision, severe headache, difficult urination, liver damage in rare cases, itching, dark urine, yellow skin/eyes, upper right-sided abdominal tenderness, unexplained "flu-like" symptoms, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, constipation, dry mouth, insomnia, decreased libido or sexual side effects, menstrual cycle changes, hot flushes or sweating, fatigue, dizziness, irritability and/or mood swings. This medication may increase thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts in children and teens. It is advisable to seek immediate medical help if any of the above symptoms become aggravated or cause undue discomfort.
