Xalatan Eye Drop Used For
Xalatan Sterile Ophthalmic Solution is indicated for the patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and help in reduction of reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Xalatan may be used concomitantly with other topical ophthalmic drug products to lower intraocular pressure.
Directions for Xalatan eye drop
The recommended dosage is one drop (1.5 µg) in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Xalatan dosage should not exceed its once daily limit since frequent administration might decrease its effectiveness. If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, the drugs should be administered at least five (5) minutes apart.
How Xalatan eye drop works
Contact lenses should be removed prior to the administration of Xalatan and should not be reinserted up to after 15 minutes of administration. It should not be prescribed to patients with known hypersensitivity to latanoprost, benzalkonium chloride or any other ingredients in this product.
Xalatan side effects
Xalatan may cause changes in eyelashes (increased length, thickness, pigmentation, and number of lashes), eyelid skin darkening, intraocular inflammation (iritis/uveitis), iris pigmentation changes, and macular edema, including cystoid macular edema. The pigmentation might be permanent for some patients. It is advisable that patients be informed of the possibility of pigmentation in advance.
Other Xalatan eye drop Information
Xalatan takes effect & reduction of the intraocular pressure starts approximately 3 to 4 hours after administration and the maximum effect is reached after 8 to 12 hours. The pigmentation effect is on account of its property of increasing melanin content in the iris. The change is gradual and may take place over several months to years. Nevi and freckles of the iris are unaffected by treatment.
