More information about Levitra

What is Levitra?

Levitra is a prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Approved by the FDA in 2003, it has helped men feel more confident about their sex lives for nearly 20 years.

The active ingredient in Levitra, called Vardenafil, works in as little as 25 minutes and lasts for 4-5 hours.

Levitra is different from other ED medications as it is available as both a film-coated tablet and an orodispersible tablet that dissolves on the tongue, allowing you to take it discreetly without water.

How does Levitra work?

Like the well-known Viagra and Cialis, Levitra is one of many ED treatments that works by increasing the blood flow to the penis.

Vardenafil, the active ingredient in Levitra, is a type of compound called a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor. PDE-5 inhibitors break down cGMP (a type of messenger released by the body when you are aroused), which causes blood vessels in the penis to relax, allowing more blood in. This leads to stronger and longer-lasting erections.

Levitra only targets physiological issues, but erectile dysfunction can also be caused by underlying psychological problems, such as stress or anxiety. If your ED is due to a psychological cause, it is important to talk to your doctor as they may suggest a more suitable treatment.

Levitra works in combination with sexual stimulation - taking erectile dysfunction medication on its own will not immediately cause an erection.

How do I take Levitra?

Levitra is available in a film-coated pill that is intended to be swallowed whole, and as an orodispersible tablet that dissolves on the tongue within seconds, allowing you to take a pill discreetly whenever you need to.

You should take a Levitra tablet about 25 to 60 minutes before sexual activity.

For Levitra film-coated tablets (the standard kind):

  1. Swallow one tablet with some water
  2. Do not chew or crush the tablet

For Levitra Orodispersible tablets:

  1. Do not remove the tablet from the blister until you are going to take it
  2. Use dry hands to gently release the tablet from the blister pack, taking care not to crush the tablet
  3. Place the entire tablet in the mouth, on the tongue, where it will dissolve in seconds and swallow with saliva
  4. Do not take the orodispersible tablet with liquid
Levitra One Levitra tablet should be taken at least 30-60 mins before intercourse. The tablet will only work if you're sexually aroused. The tablets should only be taken when needed. The pill box/packet should be stored at room temperature. It is not advised to take more than one tablet in 24 hours for health reasons.

Can Levitra be taken with food and alcohol?

Levitra can be taken with or without food. However, certain foods, such as grapefruit juice and other grapefruit products, should also be avoided while on Levitra, as they may affect how well the medication works.

You should avoid consuming large amounts of alcohol when taking Levitra, as this may limit its efficacy. Drinking alcohol can also affect your ability to get an erection.

How long does Levitra last?

Levitra can work in as little as 25 minutes after taking the pill. For some men, Levitra can last for up to 5 hours after ingestion.

What doses of Levitra are available?

Levitra tablets come in 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg doses. The one prescribed to you depends on your individual circumstances and medical history. Most men will begin on 10mg, however, if you have a specific health condition or are on certain medications, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose.

  • 5mg - Recommended for men over 65, as well as those who have side effects.
  • 10mg - The standard dose, and the only available dose for orodispersible tablets.
  • 20mg - This dose may be recommended if the standard dose is too weak.

You should not take more than 20mg of Levitra, as this could cause increased side effects or severe back pain. This medication is also not intended for daily use. If you are looking for an ED medication that is safe to take every day, Cialis Daily may be a better option.

What is the difference between Levitra, Vardenafil, and Staxyn?

Levitra is the brand name of a product manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Bayer. Vardenafil is the name of the active ingredient found in Levitra. It is sold generically under the same name, as well as under the brand name Staxyn.

What precautions should I take?

You should not take Levitra if you:

  • are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine
  • have heart problems, such as heart disease, heart failure, angina or an irregular heartbeat
  • have recently had a heart attack or stroke
  • have a severe liver problem
  • are undergoing dialysis for your kidneys
  • have a degenerative eye disease such as retinitis pigmentosa
  • have low blood pressure (hypotension) or high blood pressure (hypertension) that is not controlled
  • have experienced a loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)

Tell your healthcare provider before taking Levitra if you have certain medical conditions, such as:

  • illnesses that can cause erections that don't go away (priapism) such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia
  • stomach ulcers
  • bleeding disorders, like hemophilia
  • a physical condition that affects the shape of your penis, such as Peyronie’s disease or cavernosal fibrosis
  • a serious kidney problem

Are there any interactions with other medications?

Certain medications may interact with Levitra. You should always tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, even if they are not prescribed.

You should not take Levitra if you are taking nitrates, which are commonly prescribed for chest pain (angina). This includes medications such as nitroglycerin. This also includes “poppers,” which are recreational drugs that contain amyl nitrite and butyl nitrite. These medications lower your blood pressure, and taking them together with an ED medication such as Levitra could cause your blood pressure to drop to unsafe levels.

Additional interactions include:

  • antiarrhythmic agents, such as quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, or sotalol
  • HIV protease inhibitors, such as ritonavir or indinavir
  • oral antifungal medications, such as ketoconazole or itraconazole
  • macrolide antibiotics, such as erythromycin or clarithromycin
  • alpha blockers, such as Flomax (tamsulosin HCl), which are commonly prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (commonly referred to as BPH or enlarged prostate)
  • guanylate cyclase stimulators such as Adempas (riociguat)
  • other ED treatments, such as Viagra (sildenafil) or Cialis (tadalafil)

What side effects are commonly associated with Levitra?

All medications carry the risk of side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most people who experience side effects while on Levitra find that they are mild to moderate. They may also go away as your body gets used to the medication.

Common side effects of Levitra include:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • flushing
  • blocked or runny nose
  • indigestion

More serious side effects include:

  • heart attack
  • an allergic reaction
  • chest pain
  • a prolonged erection that will not go away (priapism)
  • sudden loss of vision
  • hearing loss

If you develop these symptoms, or any other concerning side effects, you should stop taking Levitra and seek immediate medical attention. You may be better off taking a lower dose or a different medication.

For further details about the potential side effects of Levitra, please refer to the instructions for use, which will be included in your delivery.
