Staxyn is an FDA-approved prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Unlike other ED treatments, it dissolves easily on the tongue, which allows you to take it discreetly without water.

The active ingredient in Staxyn, vardenafil, works in as little as 60 minutes and lasts for 4-5 hours.

Staxyn works by increasing blood flow to the penis. Vardenafil, the active ingredient in Staxyn, is a type of compound called a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor. How long does Staxyn last?

Staxyn begins to work 60 minutes after taking the pill. For some men, Staxyn can last for up to 4-5 hours after ingestion.

Staxyn tablets are available in 10mg doses.

What are the differences between Staxyn, Vardenafil, and Levitra?

Staxyn is the brand name of a product manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Bayer. Vardenafil is the name of the active ingredient found in Staxyn. Although they contain the same active ingredient, Levitra film-coated tablets and vardenafil film-coated tablets are not interchangeable with Staxyn.

Erectile dysfunction medications are generally well-tolerated, but they may not be suitable if you have certain health conditions.

You should not take Staxyn if you have been told by your healthcare provider to refrain from sexual activity due to health problems.

You should inform your healthcare provider if you have certain medical conditions, such as:

• low blood pressure (hypotension) or high blood pressure (hypertension) that is not controlled
• if you have recently had a heart attack, seizure or stroke
• a familial history of long QT syndrome (QT prolongation)
• a severe liver problem
• kidney problems which require dialysis
• retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease
• ­have experienced a loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
• stomach ulcers
• a bleeding problem
• Peyronie’s disease, or any other physical condition that affects the shape of your penis
• a past history of erections that don't go away (priapism)
• blood cell problems such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia
• hearing problems
• phenylketonuria, as this medication contains phenylalanine
• fructose intolerance

Certain medications may interact with Staxyn. You should always tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, even if they are not prescribed.

You should not take Staxyn if you are taking ­nitrates, which are commonly prescribed for chest pain (angina). This includes medications containing nitroglycerin or isosorbide dinitrate and isosorbide mononitrate. This also includes recreational drugs known as “poppers,” which contain amyl nitrite and butyl nitrite.

These drugs lower your blood pressure, and taking them together with an ED medication such as Staxyn could cause your blood pressure to drop to unsafe levels. Ask your doctor if you are unsure if you are taking nitrates.

Additional interactions include:

• medicines that treat an abnormal heartbeat, such as quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone or sotalol
• HIV protease inhibitors, such as ritonavir, atazanavir, or indinavir
• oral antifungal medications, such as ketoconazole or itraconazole
• certain antibiotics, such as erythromycin or clarithromycin
• guanylate cyclase stimulators such as Adempas (riociguat)
• other ED treatments, such as Viagra (sildenafil) or Cialis (tadalafil)

You should not initiate vardenafil treatment with Staxyn if you are on alpha blockers such as Hytrin (terazosin HCl), Flomax (tamsulosin HCl), Cardura (doxazosin mesylate), or Uroxatral (alfuzosin HCl), which are commonly prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension).

All medications carry the risk of side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most people who experience side effects while on Staxyn find that they are mild to moderate. They may also go away as your body gets used to the medication.

Common side effects of Staxyn include:

• headache
• flushing
• dizziness
• indigestion
• blocked or runny nose
• upset stomach
• back pain

More serious but uncommon side effects include:

• a prolonged erection that will not go away (priapism)
• changes in color vision, such as differences in blue and green
• sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
• sudden loss of hearing

If you develop these symptoms, or any other concerning side effects, you should stop taking Staxyn and seek immediate medical attention. A different treatment plan may be more suitable for you.
