More information about Stendra

What is Stendra?

Stendra is the newest FDA-approved erectile dysfunction treatment available, and it is also the quickest. Stendra gets to work in as little as 15 minutes and lasts for up to 6 hours.

Erectile dysfunction treatments do not cure ED, but can treat your symptoms.

The active ingredient in Stendra, avanafil, works by increasing blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and sustain an erection.

How does Stendra work?

Stendra improves blood flow to penile tissues so that you can get and keep an erection through sexual stimulation.

Stendra contains the active ingredient avanafil, which works by inhibiting an enzyme known as PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase type 5). PDE-5 inhibitors work by breaking down cGMP, a type of messenger released by the body when you are aroused, causing blood vessels in the penis to relax and allow more blood in. This leads to longer-lasting erections.

It normally takes 15 to 20 minutes for Stendra to take effect. As with other ED medications, sexual stimulation is needed for an erection.

How do I take Stendra?

Take Stendra as and when you need it, ideally 30 minutes before sex (although the drug can work in as little as 15 minutes).

You should always take medications exactly as prescribed.

Your Stendra pill should be taken as and when you need it, ideally 30 minutes before sex, although most men reported a change in their condition in as little as 15 minutes. Additional notes include:

Spedra Avoid taking this medication after having had too much alcohol, as this can increase the risk of side effects, or reduce the efficacy of the treatment. This treatment can be taken with or without food, without it having too much of an influence on the treatment's effectiveness. It's best to use the lowest dose of Stendra that is effective for you and ideally not more than one dose during a 24-hour period. Stendra tablets should be taken before you have sexual intercourse. If you feel that your dosage is too strong or too weak, you should discuss it with your doctor, who may switch you to a different dosage.

Can Stendra be taken with food and alcohol?

Stendra can be taken with or without food. However, certain foods, such as grapefruit juice and other grapefruit products, should also be avoided while on Stendra, as they may affect how well the medication works.

You should not drink heavily (more than three units of alcohol) when using this medication, as this can increase your risk of side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, increased heart rate, and changes in blood pressure.

What doses are available?

Stendra tablets come in three doses: 50mg, 100mg, 200mg. The standard starting dose is 100mg. You may be prescribed a different dose depending on your experience.

  • 50mg - for men who are prone to or have experienced side effects
  • 100mg - this is the recommended starting dose
  • 200mg - this can be suggested if the standard 100mg Stendra dose has not proven to be effective enough

Do not take more than one tablet a day. If you are looking for an ED medication that is safe to take every day, Cialis Daily may be a better option.

What side effects are associated with Stendra?

All prescription medications may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. People who do experience side effects while on Stendra find that they are usually mild to moderate in nature, and may go away as your body gets used to the medication.

Common side effects of Stendra include:

  • headache
  • facial flushing
  • nasal congestion
  • sore throat
  • back pain

Stendra also increases the risk for certain rare but serious side effects, such as:

  • a prolonged erection that will not go away (priapism)
  • sudden loss of vision, such as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
  • hearing loss, which may be accompanied by tinnitus
  • If you develop these symptoms, or experience any other concerning side effects, you should stop using Stendra and seek immediate medical attention. Your healthcare provider may suggest a lower dose or a different medication.

What precautions should I take with Stendra?

You should not take Stendra if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine.

Tell your healthcare provider before taking Stendra if you have certain medical conditions, such as if you have:

  • circulation or heart problems, such as heart attack, heart failure, angina, an irregular heartbeat, or stroke
  • had heart surgery in the last 6 months
  • low blood pressure (hypotension) or high blood pressure (hypertension) that is not controlled
  • a physical condition that affects the shape of your penis, such as Peyronie’s disease or cavernosal fibrosis
  • experienced an erection that lasted for more than 4 hours
  • sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia
  • experienced vision loss due to non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
  • a degenerative eye disease such as retinitis pigmentosa
  • kidney problems or are undergoing dialysis for your kidneys
  • stomach ulcers
  • liver problems
  • bleeding problems

You should also inform your doctor of any other medical conditions you have before taking Stendra.

Stendra does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) so it is important that you practice safe sex practices.

Are there any interactions with other medications?

Certain medications may interact with Stendra. You should always tell your doctor about any medications and supplements you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements, even if they are not prescribed.

You should not take Stendra if you are taking nitrates, which are commonly prescribed for chest pain (angina). This includes medications such as nitroglycerin. This also includes “poppers,” which are recreational drugs that contain amyl nitrite and butyl nitrite. Taking these medications alongside an ED medication such as Stendra could cause an unsafe drop in your blood pressure.

Additional interactions include:

  • antiarrhythmic agents, such as quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone or sotalol
  • HIV protease inhibitors, such as ritonavir, saquinavir, atazanavir or indinavir
  • oral antifungal medications, such as ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporonox)
  • macrolide antibiotics, such as erythromycin, telithromycin or clarithromycin
  • alpha blockers, such as Flomax (tamsulosin HCl), Uroxatral (alfuzosin HCl), Cardura (doxazosin), and Hytrin (terazosin), which are commonly prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (commonly referred to as BPH or enlarged prostate)
  • guanylate cyclase stimulators such as Adempas (riociguat)
  • other ED treatments, such as Viagra (sildenafil) or Cialis (tadalafil)

You should also tell all your healthcare providers that you take this medication, especially in the case of emergency medical care for heart problems. It is important for them to know when you last took Stendra.
