More information about Tadalafil

What is Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a prescription medicine which treats erectile dysfunction and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is the generic form of the branded treatment Cialis, which is produced by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. Tadalafil contains the same active ingredient as the brand medication. As it is the generic version, it is manufactured by several companies.

Due to its lasting effectiveness, Cialis and Tadalafil is commonly referred to as the “weekend pill”.

Benefits of Tadalafil

It is mainly prescribed to men struggling with erectile dysfunction but can also provide relief to men with prostate gland enlargement. The condition is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate. Tadalafil can be combined with alpha-blockers if the erectile dysfunction is caused by BPH. The treatment can also be combined with other BPH treatments such as Tamsulosin.

This medication can be used to treat lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

ED treatments such as Tadalafil have also been associated with the treatment of Peyronie's disease, as they can ease the pain caused by the disease.

How does Tadalafil work?

Tadalafil is a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, which works by boosting blood flow to the penis when the person engages in sexual activity. It does this by breaking down cGMP, which causes blood vessels in the penis to relax. This leads to a better blood flow in the penis and harder erections.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by physiological and psychological issues, and treatments like Tadalafil will treat the former. If your ED is caused by psychological issues, you should contact your doctor for appropriate treatments.

All PDE-5 inhibitors, including Tadalafil, only work in combination with sexual stimulation, and you will not get an erection by just taking the pill.

After ejaculation, the effects will wear off but will work again when the man gets aroused.

How do I take Tadalafil?

Always follow the advice of your doctor when taking any medication. Your doctor can also adjust the dose if you suffer from side effects or if your prescribed dose isn’t effective.

The following is a summary:

  • take one pill 30 minutes before sexual activity
  • take the pill with a glass of water
  • do not take more than one tablet within 24 hours
  • effects of a dose can last up to 36 hours

Can I take Tadalafil with food and alcohol?

Tadalafil can be taken with food. However, alcohol can interfere with how it works, lowering your blood pressure and your blood flow. Avoid excessive alcohol when you plan to use Tadalafil, and take care standing up or moving around if you do have a drink because it may make you dizzy.

How long does Tadalafil last?

Tadalafil can last up to 36 hours, although this is not the case for every man. The effect begins to lessen after 6 hours of taking the tablet.

What dosages of Tadalafil are available?

Tadalafil is available in a range of doses, and your doctor will prescribe the most suitable one for you.

Your prescription will depend on your level of erectile difficulty, your health, and any current medication you are taking. Any previous reactions to PDE-5 inhibitors should be reported to your prescribing doctor.

Tablets are available in 5, 10 and 20 mg. The recommended starting dose is 10 mg, and this is sufficient for most men, but it can vary depending on your needs. The 20mg dose may be prescribed if smaller doses have not been effective.

The 5mg dose is usually prescribed for men who need a small daily dose, or who have medical issues that prevent a higher amount, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or PDE-5 inhibitor side effects.

What is the difference between Tadalafil and Adcirca?

Adcirca also contains the ingredient tadalafil, but this medication is prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, high blood pressure in your lungs). You should not use these medications together.

What precautions should I take when taking Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a prescription drug, and whilst it is very tolerable, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with certain medical conditions. You should not take Tadalafil if you:

  • are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • have a heart disease, or have had a stroke, a heart attack or heart failure
  • have uncontrolled high blood pressure or low blood pressure
  • have angina

Please consult your doctor if you have a liver disease and would like to use Tadalafil as you might have to use a lower dosing unit.

Reports have warned that Tadalafil and other ED treatments might lead to back pain, however, studies have concluded that the risk is very low. However, if you do experience back pain, you should consult your doctor.

You should also avoid eating or drinking grapefruit juice as it can reduce the treatment’s effectiveness.

Remember that you can still carry sexually transmitted diseases when you have erectile dysfunction. You should always use protection and get tested regularly.

Interactions with other medicines

Other medicines, both prescription medicine and over-the-counter medicine, might interact with Tadalafil.

You should not take Tadalafil if you use nitrates, or “poppers”, which are commonly prescribed for chest pain (angina). You should also not combine Tadalafil with other ED medicines such as Viagra or Vardenafil.

This treatment should also not be combined with Doxazosin as this combination can lower your blood pressure and might make you feel dizzy or lightheaded. Avoid using Amyl nitrite in combination with tadalafil too, as it can lead to excessive lowering of blood pressure and potentially lead to cardiovascular collapse. It is also not recommended to use nitroglycerin combined with Tadalafil as it can lead to very low blood pressure and cardiovascular collapse.

You should consult your doctor if you use the antibiotic Erythromycin as it can increase the level or effect of the ED drug. The same goes for Rifampin, but this treatment will decrease the level or effect of Tadalafil. You should avoid taking both these medications if you suffer from pulmonary hypertension.

Be aware that some antifungal drugs may increase levels of Tadalafil in your blood and lead to serious side effects.

Because of these potential drug interactions, it is important that your doctor or healthcare provider determine if Tadalafil is compatible with any other medical conditions or current medications. You may be able to take Tadalafil at a lower dose even if you already take certain drugs or have pre-existing conditions, so always disclose your full medical history.

Women and children under 18 should not take Tadalafil. It is not effective in women and may lead to side effects.

What side effects are commonly associated with Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a prescription medication, meaning you are not able to buy it over the counter at a pharmacy - this is because it can cause side effects.

Tadalafil is usually safe and trouble free for the majority of users, but there are some side effects to be aware of. If you experience these you should consult your doctor, but many men find they need a short period of time as their body adjusts to the new medication before continuing without problems. If you have regular side effects a smaller dose may be more suitable.

Common side effects can include:

  • nasal congestion
  • facial flushing
  • headaches
  • muscles aches
  • indigestion

Less common symptoms experienced by less than one in 1,000 men include:

  • chest pains
  • dizziness
  • rash
  • palpitations
  • vision loss
  • hearing loss

If you experience any adverse effects, please speak to your doctor before taking any further pills.

Serious side effects are rare with Tadalafil and an allergic reaction is extremely unlikely, however, if you experience difficulties breathing, develop hives, or suddenly lose your vision, seek immediate medical help.

Priapism, also known as prolonged erection, is a common worry, but a prolonged painful erection is very rare. However, you should seek immediate medical advice if this occurs.
