Aviane FAQs

What is Aviane?

Aviane is an FDA-approved birth control pill that is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It is a combined oral contraceptive which contains two hormones: ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel.

When taken on the first day of your menstrual cycle, it provides immediate protection. In addition to being a reliable contraception method, Aviane can also regulate your periods and make them lighter and reduce premenstrual symptoms.

You can purchase Aviane, as well as Lutera and Orsythia, which contain the same formulation under different brand names, online from Speedy Health.

How does Aviane work?

Aviane uses 0.10 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg ethinyl estradiol to prevent pregnancy. These hormones work together to prevent ovulation and thicken the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to enter the womb and reach an egg. Aviane also thins the lining of the womb, so that in the unlikely event that ovulation does take place, an egg wouldn't be able to attach and grow.

How do I take Aviane?

There will be 28 tablets in your pill strip - 21 active tablets and 7 inactive tablets. You should take one tablet every day at the same time each day.

For immediate protection, take your first Aviane tablet on the first day of your period (the day you begin bleeding). You can begin the Sunday after your period starts, but you will need to use a back-up contraception method, such as a condom and spermicide, for the first seven days to ensure that you are protected against pregnancy.

It is important that you follow the instructions of the prescribing doctor as well as the information included with the medication. This medication should be stored at room temperature.

What if I miss a pill?

The next steps after a missed pill will depend on how many have been missed, what type of pill it is, how far into the pill strip you are, and at what point in your cycle you began taking Aviane. The more pills you miss, the greater your risk of becoming pregnant.

If you miss one pill, take it as soon as you remember and continue taking the rest as usual. If you miss multiple pills, refer to the patient leaflet for the next steps.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you have missed two menstrual periods in a row.

What side effects are associated with Aviane?

Side effects associated with combined contraceptive pills tend to be mild in nature and may go away as your body gets used to Aviane.

The most common side effects include:

  • spotting or bleeding in between periods
  • nausea and vomiting
  • weight gain
  • breast tenderness
  • difficulty wearing contact lenses

Serious side effects, such as blood clots or allergic reactions, are rare, but can occur. You should seek immediate medical attention if you believe you are experiencing one of these serious side effects, or if any side effects become bothersome or persistent.

What precautions should I be aware of?

Do not take Aviane if you smoke, especially if you are over the age of 35, as this can increase your likelihood of developing cardiovascular complications, such as blood clots. If you smoke, you may benefit more from another contraception method, such as the progestin-only pill (POP).

You should also not use this treatment if you have:

  • a history of blood clots
  • a history of heart attack or stroke
  • previously had a cancer which is sensitive to estrogen, such as breast cancer
  • uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • have chest pain
  • diabetes which affects your circulation
  • a history of severe migraine headaches
  • an allergy to any of the ingredients in this medication
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • liver problems, such as tumors or liver disease
  • kidney or adrenal disease
  • frequent migraine attacks

Aviane does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so you will still need to practice safe sex. It is also not recommended to breastfeed while on combined contraceptive pills, as the hormones can pass into breast milk.

You should tell the doctor before using this medication if you have:

  • gallbladder disease, heart disease, liver disease or kidney disease
  • diabetes
  • high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • depression
  • epilepsy
  • a history of irregular menstrual periods

Aviane may not be as effective when taken alongside certain medications, so it is important to mention any natural, over-the-counter, or prescription drugs you are using during your consultation. This includes St. John's Wort, aromatase inhibitors, barbiturates, phenylbutazone, phenytoin, griseofulvin, rifampin, and certain antibiotics.

Can I buy Aviane online?

You can order Aviane, Lutera, and Orsythia online from Speedy Health after completing an online consultation. Our doctors will review your consultation to ensure that this contraceptive is suitable for you. If your order is not approved, you will not be charged and the order will be cancelled. If approved, your prescription will be sent out to our pharmacy, and your medication will be sent with next-day delivery.
