Stendra FAQs

What is Stendra (Avanafil)?

Stendra (Avanafil) is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription medicine used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).

Stendra contains the active ingredient Avanafil, and is highly effective. Clinical studies have shown that Avanafil works very quickly and causes an erection within approximately 15 minutes after a dose.

Stendra is the same medication as the UK drug sold under the brand name ‘Spedra’. There is currently no generic version of Stendra available in the United States.

How does Avanafil work?

Avanafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused. It belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors (PDE-5), like many other ED treatments.

An erection occurs via a complex chain of events. When you are aroused, signals from your nerves cause the release of chemical messengers within the tissues of the penis. One of these chemical messengers is called cyclic GMP (cGMP).

Cyclic GMP widens the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow in. This leads to the penis becoming hard and erect. PDE-5 normally breaks down cGMP; however, Avanafil blocks the action of PDE-5, enabling you to achieve and maintain an erection.

Avanafil won't cause an erection on its own; you need sexual stimulation for it to work. The effects wear off after ejaculation, but it can work again when you're aroused. It usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes for Avanafil tablets to start working.

How quickly does Stendra work?

The results of a clinical trial showed that 25.9% and 29.1% of patients, taking 100mg and 200mg of Stendra respectively, achieved an erection in as little as 15 minutes. This was in contrast to the 14.9% of men who took a placebo (an inactive drug).

Patients taking Stendra also showed significant improvements relative to placebo in getting an erection sufficient for penetration and successful intercourse.

How do I take Stendra?

You take Stendra when needed:

  • You can take Stendra 100mg or 200mg tablets as early as 15 minutes before sexual activity.
    • If you are prescribed 50mg tablets, these can be taken approximately 30 minutes before sexual activity.
  • Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, or as directed by your doctor.
  • Sexual stimulation is needed for Stendra to work.
  • Do not take Stendra more than once a day.

Always follow your doctor's instructions and the details provided in your medication's instructions. Your doctor can change your dose depending on what is effective and tolerable for you.

Can I take Stendra with food and alcohol?

You can take Stendra with or without food. Avoid excessive alcohol intake when using this medication. Drinking too much alcohol when taking Stendra can increase your chances of experiencing side effects.

Grapefruit may interact with Avanafil and lead to unwanted side effects. Avoid the use of grapefruit products.

What dosages of Stendra are available?

Stendra is available in three dosages: 50mg, 100mg, 200mg. The recommended starting dose is 100mg.

The dose may change depending on your own individual experience as well as your experience with potential side effects.

  • 50mg - For men who are prone to or have experienced side effects
  • 100mg - This is the recommended starting dose
  • 200mg - This can be an option if the standard 100mg Stendra dosage has not proven to be effective enough

What precautions should I be aware of when taking Stendra?

Before you take Stendra, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • have or have had heart problems (including an irregular heartbeat, angina, heart failure, a heart attack or stroke)
  • have had heart surgery within the last 6 months
  • have low blood pressure, or uncontrolled high blood pressure

  • have ever had severe vision loss, including an eye problem called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
  • have had a sudden decrease or loss of hearing
  • have or have had stomach ulcers
  • have liver or kidney problems

Can it interact with other medicines?

Stendra may interact with:

  • nitrates (often prescribed to treat chest pain)
  • medicines called guanylate cyclase stimulators
  • medicines for HIV
  • some types of oral antifungal and antibiotics
  • medicines called alpha-blockers

You should always tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Who cannot take Stendra?

Most men with erectile dysfunction can take Stendra tablets. You may not be able to take it if you have some medical conditions.

Do not take Stendra if you:

  • take nitrates or guanylate cyclase stimulators
  • use street drugs called “poppers,” such as amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate
  • are allergic to Avanafil or any of the other ingredients in Stendra
  • are a woman
  • are under 18 years of age

What are common Stendra side effects?

What alternative treatment options are there?

Although Stendra has similar effects on the body as Sildenafil (Viagra), or Tadalafil (Cialis), it offers an alternative to men who may have been more sensitive to the active ingredients in these treatments.

Stendra vs Viagra

Viagra is an alternative medication used to treat ED, it contains the active ingredient Sildenafil citrate. Viagra is taken 30 minutes before sexual intercourse and its effects last up to 4 hours. Stendra may offer quicker effects
