More information about Junel

What is Junel Fe 24?

Junel Fe 24 is an FDA-approved combination birth control pill, also known as “the pill.” It uses the synthetic hormones norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol to effectively prevent pregnancy.

Combined oral contraceptive pills are also effective at reducing acne, helping with premenstrual symptoms, regulating your menstrual cycle, and making menstrual periods lighter and less painful.

You can order Junel Fe 24, as well as Blisovi 24 Fe, an equivalent alternative, online from SpeedyHealth.

How does Junel Fe 24 work?

Junel Fe 24 alters your body's levels of estrogen and progestin, hormones which are naturally secreted by the ovaries.

Working together, these hormones prevent the release of an egg and thicken the mucus at the entrance of the womb, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg. Junel Fe 24 also changes the quality of the lining of the womb, so that if ovulation were to occur, an egg wouldn't be able to implant and grow.

How do I take Junel Fe 24?

Junel Fe 24 consists of 28 tablets total. This includes 24 active light yellow tablets which contain the hormones norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol, followed by 4 inactive brown pills which contain ferrous fumarate. The inactive pills are there to help you maintain a daily routine of taking a pill. Take these tablets in the order that they are listed on the pack. They can be taken with or without meals.

Take one pill at the same time each day, beginning with the active light yellow tablets. If you begin taking them on the first day of your period, you will have immediate protection against pregnancy. If you start on the Sunday after your period, you should use an additional method of birth control, such as a condom, as a back-up method until you have finished the first seven tablets. Store this medication at room temperature.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects are a possibility with all medications.

Some of the most common side effects of Junel Fe 24 include:

  • headaches
  • vaginal candidiasis
  • bacterial vaginosis
  • menstrual cramps
  • acne
  • weight gain
  • nausea
  • breast tenderness

Some women do not experience any side effects, and some side effects are temporary as a result of starting the medication and will decrease over time.

One rare but serious risk of combined contraceptives are blood clots. You should get immediate medical help if you think that you may have a blood clot. Symptoms include cramping, limb pain, difficulty breathing, sharp chest pains, a faster heartbeat, and coughing up blood.

For a complete list of side effects, read the information included with your medication. If you experience any side effects that are long-lasting or something more serious, such as an allergic reaction, get immediate medical help.

What precautions should I take?

It is important that you detail past and current medical conditions, as well as any supplements, over-the-counter medication, or other prescription drugs you are taking during your consultation so that the doctor can safely treat you.

Do not use Junel Fe 24 if you are over the age of 35 and smoke, as this can increase your risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, such as a heart attack or a blood clot. Your risk is further increased with the amount of cigarettes that you smoke. Another contraception method, such as the progestin-only pill, may be more suitable for you.

Talk to your doctor about alternative contraception methods if you are going to be breastfeeding, as combined contraception may not be suitable for breastfeeding women.

Junel Fe 24 may also be unsuitable for you if you:

  • are at higher risk of blood clots or if you have certain blood clotting disorders
  • have liver tumors or liver disease
  • have abnormal, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • currently or have previously had a cancer which is sensitive to female hormones, such as breast cancer
  • are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • are currently taking medications for Hepatitis C, including ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir

You should still engage in safe sexual practices, as Junel Fe 24 does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
